Sports Day

Sports days are both loved and loathed by children and parents. Some children can’t wait to get into their sport gear and join in the activities, others are just happy not to be indoors doing sums and then there are always children who prefer to just to sit on the sidelines and watch. Parents will also usually fit into one of these categories preferring to either join in or cheer on the teams from a distance. School sports days are a great way to help children become more confident in their abilities, discover new interests and get outside and get moving! That’s why we’ve put together our top sports day tips that will help you and your little ones to really enjoy the event.

Research

Most schools will send out a letter; however these are easily misplaced and can miss out information so take a look at your schools website for extra info, or chat to the school staff about sports day plans. If you can’t make the entire day you might be able to catch the race your child is in so double check race times. If you are attending sports day it’s a good idea to find out where you’ll be sat and if you’ll need a blanket or can bring a fold out chair, (some schools have strict no chair policies!). Many schools like to host parent races too so if you’re the sporty type this might be for you!

Kit

Sports days usually have a slightly different dress code when it comes to P.E gear. Your school might request your child either come to school ready dressed in sportswear or to bring it in a bag. Many schools use a colour coding to differentiate teams and request your child wear clothing of a certain colour. We sell school P.E shirts both polo and t shirt style in a rainbow of colours.
Of course we can’t predict the weather, and even if the forecast is sunny there’s always a chance of showers, so it’s a good idea to take a P.E kit bag with some jogging bottoms just in case the temperature drops. A school sports jacket is also a good idea even if it’s a sunny day, not just in case of rain but children may be sitting for long periods of time while watching other activities, and it could get chillier. Not to mention a waterproof jacket makes a great makeshift blanket to rest on. We stock reversible fleece jackets, perfect for sports day, along with sweatshirts, both of which will last throughout the year and can be worn for both school and out of school activities.
Plimsolls are perfect for sports day as they aren’t quite as bulky as trainers, but for the little ones who are still getting used to laces, Velcro plimsolls might be a more suitable option, as they will be wearing them all day. We also do slip on plimsolls for another easy option.

Have fun

If your youngster is apprehensive about sports day, or their first sports day is coming up, show them that sports day can be fun! Get together a couple of hoola hoops some eggs, spoons and beanbags in your garden or local park and have fun making up games and introducing them to the equipment they’ll be using on the day. This is not only a great introduction to sports day, but also a great way to get you and your little one active and show them that sports day is about taking part and having fun.
